Dongfeng Forthing Lingzhi M5 EV

2026-10-07 18:30:02

The Dongfeng Forthing Lingzhi M5 EV is a pure electric full-size MPV developed by Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor, based on the classic ICE-powered Lingzhi M5 platform. As a rare all-electric offering in China's commercial vehicle and passenger transport segment, it inherits the Lingzhi family's hallmark of vast cabin space and versatile practicality, while significantly slashing operational costs via its electric drivetrain. As of 2026, the model has established itself as an essential business workhorse across urban logistics, e-hailing fleets, and light commercial transfer services.

Model Overview

Classified as a large MPV, the Lingzhi M5 EV measures over 5.1 metres in overall length depending on the variant, with a generous 3,000 mm wheelbase. Its core brand identity centres on low running costs, cavernous cabin space, and being a premier commercial EV workhorse. Key highlights include:

Exceptional Space Utilisation: Available in versatile 5-seater, 7-seater, and 9-seater configurations. Thanks to a flat-floor design, it delivers impressive cargo capacity, catering seamlessly to operators requiring passenger transport alongside occasional bulky cargo haulage (such as furniture and courier parcels).

Ultra-Low Running Costs: As a fully electric MPV, its per-kilometre energy expense is significantly lower than that of conventional ICE rivals. Benefiting from green-plate new energy vehicle privileges in many Chinese cities, it avoids traffic restriction schemes, substantially improving operational uptime.

Proven Technical Platform: Built upon the Lingzhi lineage's time-tested chassis architecture spanning over two decades, its mechanical setup prioritises reliability and high parts commonality. Maintenance is straightforward and budget-friendly, effectively mitigating downtime risks for commercial operators.

Development History

Powertrain Transition (2016–2020): Dongfeng Forthing initiated an ICE-to-EV conversion project based on the standard Lingzhi, making its initial foray into the all-electric commercial vehicle market.

Line-Up Expansion (2021–2024): To cater to diverse operational needs, Forthing introduced tailored variants—including the 2-seater Panel Van for cargo logistics, the City Transport variant for passenger commuting, and the Passenger variant for corporate transfers. Operating range was progressively enhanced, rising from the initial 300 km threshold to 420 km–460 km (CLTC).

Current Standing (2026): By 2026, the Lingzhi M5 EV has reached a mature phase in its product lifecycle. Through continuous refinements to battery pack technology and thermal management systems, real-world range stability in extreme weather conditions has been secured, while competitive financial leasing packages continue to lower barriers to entry for fleet operators.

Market Performance

Target Demographic: Primarily caters to independent transport operators (e-hailing and carpooling drivers), SME corporate fleets, courier and logistics entrepreneurs, as well as large families prioritising low total cost of ownership.

Market Standing: It remains one of the few MPVs in its segment offering an ultra-long wheelbase, sliding side doors, and a zero-emission electric powertrain. Thanks to its competitive pricing and minimal upkeep expenses, it commands a strong market presence in tier-two and tier-three cities as well as semi-urban regions.

Owner Feedback: Operators widely commend its low electricity running costs, expansive interior, and steady resale value. Areas noted for improvement primarily revolve around basic infotainment intelligence, commercial-grade interior trim materials, and noticeable range drop during sustained high-speed highway cruising.

Core Technologies

Electric Powertrain and Charging: Powered by a high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering peak outputs between 90 kW and 150 kW, paired with a high-capacity lithium battery pack. It supports DC fast charging, allowing a 50%+ top-up in approximately 40 minutes at commercial fast-charging stations.

EV Powertrain and Battery Safety: Integrated with an intelligent thermal management system featuring low-temperature preheating and high-temperature cooling, ensuring consistent discharge performance across varying climates.

Chassis and Load Capacity: Employs a front double-wishbone independent suspension paired with a heavy-duty rear leaf spring or coil spring non-independent setup, striking a practical balance between passenger ride comfort and commercial payload durability.

Future Plans

As of 2026, the Lingzhi M5 EV remains a cornerstone within Dongfeng Forthing’s commercial line-up. Moving forward, the engineering team will continue optimising battery energy density while introducing targeted upgrades to the infotainment and telematics systems to meet modern e-hailing connectivity demands. Although brand resources are progressively shifting towards the next-generation Xinghai EV platform, the Lingzhi M5 EV will endure as an evergreen commercial model, anchoring the brand's presence in high-frequency, budget-sensitive commercial transport during the new energy transition.
